Other Types of Motorcycle Helmets
Motocross Motorcycle Helmets
Motocross motorcycle helmets use extra long visors and chin bars. They have a
partially open face to provide extra visibility and to allow the motorcycle
rider to wear goggles. The visor provides UV protection from the sun during
jumps and hill climbs. You should always make sure your chin bar is securely
fastened across your face when using a motocross motorcycle helmet.
Open-Face Motorcycle Helmets
Open-face motorcycle helmets are designed to protect the entire back of the
skull, but lack any significant protection for the face. However, some do have
optional face visors. These helmets leave the motorcycle rider exposed to
everything from dust to bugs to rocks thrown by other vehicles. For this reason
many motorcycle riders will wear goggles or sunglasses with their open-face
motorcycle helmets.
Shorty
The shorty, or half motorcycle helmet, provides only the least amount of
protection required by most state motorcycle helmet laws. These helmets
basically only protect the top of the head, and may come off entirely or shift
forward or backward in the event of an accident. Occasionally goggles or
sunglasses are worn with the shorty.
Style Rags
Other types of motorcycle head wear, which do not provide any protection in case
of accident, include beanies and novelty helmets. These are much lighter
implementations that do not contain any of the foam that absorbs the energy of
an accident to protect the brain during impact. The main reasons these types of
head wear are worn are for style and sun protection. |
